Much anticipation surrounded our departure from Scotland. We had been in lving in Edinburgh for 7 weeks with a 6 day berak to visit the Scottish highlandsand would be leaving the UK to travel to Italy for a brief vacation in Venice and then to Milan for a week for the Sicurezza conference for Dave.
While we had let the children know our days would be busy touring Venice, they were happy to have a few days off homeschool. Intermingled with our excitement was some sadness to leave a place we had come to know and enjoy. We had certainly enjoyed our large, Georgian-style house house in Edinburgh. The older 2 kids were familiar enough with our area to walk to the store and library without us. We all knew our way around the area, how to navigate the bus system, what our favorite playground was and had gotten quite used to the rhythm of life in that remarkable city.
We don't anticipate being able to return on this trip to Edinburgh or Scotland as a family, but it was a marvelous place to dip our feet in the European waters (the English channel?), so to speak. And in true Edinburgh manner, she sent us off on a dreich, dreary days.
Ah, Edinburgh, we have come to know ye well
This seven week trip left us many stories to tell
Our stay was pleasant as summer turned to Fall.
We chatted and made friends in St Vincent’s church hall.
Your castle on the rock high above a royal cobblestone mile.
Gave way to planned parks in the New Town style.
From Arthur's Seat, we saw Hollyrood, fit for her Highness
While Dynamic Earth showed us nature at its finest,
Making chocolate and exploring Planets Forbidden.
From your Camera Obscura, no playground was hidden.
More adventures we had in the Highlands up north:
From castles to lochs to the Firth of Forth.
We have so much enjoyed our “Edinburgh home,”
But now it is time again for us to roam.
Farewell, Edinburgh, until another day
To Italy we are now on our way.
