Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos - Córdoba

One of our stops in Córdoba included the medieval palace of the Christian monarchs, known in Spanish as the "Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos." We had a beautiful, sunny day in which to enjoy the grounds which included verdant gardens and lovely reflective ponds. I can only imagine what it's like in full, spring bloom!

This fortress was once the main residences of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. (If you need a brush up on Spain's history like we did, you can check out our new favorite Crash Course in History YouTube video).

We enjoyed seeing an amazing Roman mosaic on display inside the palace depicting Polyphemus and Galatea. It was found in 1959 in the subsoil under Plaza de Corredera and was about 25 feet tall and wide! The 3D effect of the differently shaded tiles was really neat.

We also enjoyed walking across the Roman bridge in town, though we found it was more fun to look at from a distance...once on it, you could hardly see the supports at all.
