Today we had planned to fly to Sicily with a layover in Milan. After a few weeks in Sicily, the plan was to travel up the coast of Italy to visit Pompeii and then Rome.
Then Italy made headlines worldwide for having the next big coronavirus outbreak. While we'd already bought nonrefundable plane tickets, yesterday we discussed changing plans. We had ten minutes left to cancel our Airbnb and chalk the flights up as a loss. Dave has a conference at the end of March in Copenhagen and we were concerned that we'd be stuck in Italy and unable to get there if the situation worsens. Plus, we don't have to go there now, there's no sense in increased risk of exposure when we don't need to. Unfortunately, I do imagine this will spread quickly across Europe and other countries will be in a similar situation.
For now, we've cancelled our date with Italy and have chosen to head to Carcassonne, France by bus today instead. We'll send updates soon.
