Spoiled by CA produce

Living right in the city center comes with wonderful pluses. Nearly all attractions are a 20 minute walk or 15 minute bus ride. I also truly appreciate a market being the next block over - literally 2 minutes from the kitchen if we need something. If I don't want that Sainsbury, there are both a Tesco Express and a Co-Op Market each a five minute walk away. However, you are rather beholden to what any market has. Fortunately, unlike similarly sized market in the U.S., these are surprisingly well stocked and prices match the larger stores.

When we were getting the kitchen up and running in our Edinburgh flat, we were able to find flour, sugar (brown, granulated, and powdered), fruits, veggies, batteries, parchment paper, aluminum foil, tupperware and lots of other grocery items. The store is about 20 ft wide and maybe 70 ft deep? You don't get choices, just one example of each of the above categories, but that's fine with me!  We could not find molasses (aka treacle), so our gingerbread recipe will have to wait.

Large Onions?
Now all that being said, I found the label on these onions a little ironic. I grabbed the bag because if you wanted white onions, that's your only choice (not individually, not in bigger packs, etc). However, they looked a puny to me and the size that would be overlooked by everyone at Sprouts choosing their own onions. And yet the label says "Large Onions"??

It became a bit more clear the next day when we went to the church Harvest Festival dinner down the street and as part of their auction fundraiser they auctioned off the produce used to decorate the church for the festival. Included was a really large white onion - they touted it came from France!

Perhaps they just don't grow that large here. Makes me miss those California onions...
