A day in Basel, Switzerland

We had a thoroughly enjoyable day visiting with our friends, Jonas and Michelle, and their three lovely boys at their home in Basel, Switzerland. They are avid game players like us and we enjoyed playing several games new to us (Azul, Suburbia, and The Vast) and feasted on a traditional raclette dinner.

Raclette is a local cheese that you heat at the table on tiny square skillets until it is melted and then you pour it over boiled potatoes on your plate. Often it's accompanied by little pickles, pickled onions and pickled garlic cloves. It was delicious and got two thumbs up from all our boys. Of course, it's also fun because, like fondue, you melt it right at the table (imagine an upside down electric skillet with a platform for your square skillet to sit on and they are heated from above). The boys have been theorizing on how we can recreate this in San Diego without the traditional table skillet. Apparently, though, the trick is finding the raclette!

We failed to get a photo of us at dinner but managed a nice group photo at the end of the evening!
