Hiking in the Vosges Mountains

Christmas afternoon and again the following day we enjoyed hikes into the Vosges mountains above the town with my second cousin, sister and a few others. We saw bunkers leftover from WWI as the French-German front was right along that ridge.

December 26 was especially perfect - we could drive up to the snow and hike in about six inches of snow and then return to a (slightly) warmer area. We managed the cold and snow with waterproof pants layered over warmer pants, rain jackets over puffy jackets and woven mittens were satisfactory for our hands. We layered as much as we could, but this is definitely pushing the limits of the wardrobe we packed for 9 months... With long underwear for top and bottom, we can be comfortable to about -2 C, then it just gets too cold. The children were mesmerized by the thick frost (as was I!).

The area afforded fantastic views of the Vosges mountains around us and in the distance we had the spectacular sight of the Alps towering over the clouds below.

Thomas in particular greatly enjoyed the snow and it was hard to get him to keep hiking with us as he kept stopping to play. In the end, he and Andrew decided to carry back a souvenir!
