After another quick frolic in the sand, it was time to say goodbye to the Sahara. While it was a short visit, it was worth it all the same to see this amazing and surreal landscape with a stark beauty all it's own.
We had a long day of driving to Fes with only a few stops along the way. We tried to keep things more efficient by grabbing some pizza on the road. Alas, it didn't pass muster for nearly any of the boys as it's pizza sauce resembled tangine sauce more than it did tomato sauce.
However, we did enjoy a little walk around the cedar forests near Azrou. They really reminded us of the Lebanese flag and were certainly impressive in stature. There is a troop of Barbary macaques who inhabits this area, though they are clearly quite used to humans. (for more information about this issue, you can here). We observed carefully from a distance, but were careful not to feed or interact with them. They are wild after all!We arrived late into Fes but were greeted by our riad staff in a plaza nearby. I
had chosen one that wasn't too far into the byzantine streets, but it still necessitated hiring a couple of guys with a wheelbarrow-like cart to get us and our luggage up the narrow alley. It had been a long day and the kids were tuckered out. Dave gamely went out to procure dinner and came back with burgers for all. I'm not quite sure how he pulled this off it the middle of not-burger country, but I will say this hamburger patty had a more flavorings than I've ever had added to my patty before!
The following day we paid for a guide to tour Fes as we had only a half day before our flight out. We'll recount that in a different blog, though. For those who are interested, the price for four day Marrakesh to Fes tour for us was 1320 €. This included the driver/guide, three nights in hotels and four days of driving, and all breakfasts and dinners. It wasn't the bottom of the price range as we did want a bit of comfort and also wanted a private car instead of a group van. There are certainly more luxurious ones you can do as well. This tour was a splurge from our regular mode of travel, but we felt we got a great experience from it and are happy we went for it.
