When we arrived in Edinburgh, we decided that it made sense to buy bus passes for the family. It was about $100 each for Lothian passes, which gave us access to most buses and the tram. It was a little more for the adults and a little bit less for the kids.
In retrospect, we probably overpaid. We calculated that we would save money if we used the bus system for one round trip each day for most of our 7 weeks here. However, since we were staying in New Town, we are able to walk pretty much everywhere. With individual bus trips costing about £1 and round trips to the airports costing £10. I might have gotten close to full use of my pass with 4 trips to the airport, one tram trip to Murrayfield stadium, and 3 other trips out to further areas.
The major benefit is convenience - we don't often have enough bills for bus fare. But if you have a phone or a contactless credit credit card, you don't need the card. But you need one phone/card per traveler.
In general, Google Maps makes using the buses and trams super easy. Don't even bother with downloading the local travel apps.
If there are many of you, make sure all of you go to the station as they need your photo to issue you a pass. We had to make 2 trips.
